The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn – BBC 2007

Albert Kahn

Albert Kahn (1860-1940) started an ambitious project in 1909. He was a French banker and philanthropist with a grand vision to create a photographic inventory of life on earth. It was called The Archives of the Planet, it was shot on the Autochrome Lumière system (the first photographic process capable of making true colour pictures) and it spanned 22 years.

Over that time Kahn amassed 72,000 autochrome colour photographs and 183,000 metres (almost 100 hours) of film. However, the project stopped when he was ruined in the Great Depression. The photographs now reside at Musée Albert-Kahn, Boulogne-Billancourt, France. It is a French national museum.

In 2007 the BBC pulled the Albert Kahn story together in a ten part series called The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn – 10 episodes of approximately 52 minutes. Even if you’re not a photography history buff you might appreciate the archive of human history captured in this incredible project from a century past.
